I like to think that I paint with cloth and thread. I cut, rip, sew, dye and paint fabrics to create a connection between the past and the present, to tell stories and to incorporate seasonal and natural processes.
I grew up with women who work with their hands. My mother was a ceramicist and a talented seamstress. My Grandmother sewed, quilted, embroidered and crocheted. I was surrounded by color and texture.
I began my travels with cloth through weaving. Recently, I discovered the “new hand stitching” while reading Claire Wellesley-Smith’s book, Slow Stitch. I was fascinated by the ideas of slow stitch, sustainability, and resource efficiency through repurposed cloth as well as the meditative qualities of hand stitching.
My pieces often incorporate photo transfers that usually come from the photographs of nature that I have taken. The recording of walks and travel, and the subsequent observations, frequent my pieces. I love layering transparent and translucent fabrics like silk organza that I dye to achieve a wide range of color.
Since retiring and moving to Dripping Springs, Linda has had a fascinating artistic journey! Transitioning from acrylics to watercolors and then to oils. She loves the versatility of the different mediums. Her art is Influenced by many different factors ranging from literature to nature and dreams, contributing to a unique style blending realism with fantasy. The focus on creating three-dimensional effects and using vibrant colors and textures to evoke emotions and transport viewers to serene worlds is truly inspiring.
A lifelong potter, Linda has also experimented with glass art and has taken various classes in acrylics, watercolors, and oils.
She founded her own photography company, Uptown Photography, and had a pottery studio at the Morean Center for Clay in Saint Petersburg, Florida. She is currently the DSAL Education Coordinator focusing on helping other Artist find their passion and their inspiration.
